What Is ADHD?
ADHD is characterized by problems sustaining attention, impulsive behaviors, and hyperactivity. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of ADHD usually appear during elementary school years, though it could be as early as between ages 3 and 6 years. To be diagnosed with ADHD, symptoms must occur in multiple settings—such as at home and school—and must be impairing and present before age 12.
There are three types of ADHD:
- Predominantly inattentive
- Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
- Combined
The most common type is combined, which appears as both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms. ADHD can also co-occur with other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression and/or learning disabilities.
Signs of ADHD
The signs of ADHD can vary from person to person but generally fall into three categories:
- Inattention—Inattention may manifest as difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, and disorganization.
- Hyperactivity—Hyperactivity may appear as excessive fidgeting, restlessness, and talking excessively.
- Impulsivity—Impulsivity can present as impatience, difficulty waiting their turn, and interrupting others.
If left untreated, ADHD can significantly impact a person’s academic performance, work productivity, relationships, and self-esteem. However, with early diagnosis and proper treatment, individuals with ADHD can learn to manage their symptoms and live fulfilling lives.

The Best ADHD Treatment Program Near You
There is no cure for ADHD, but there are treatments that can help people manage their symptoms. Connections Wellness Group offers a range of treatment modalities to meet the needs of patients struggling with ADHD. The most common treatments for ADHD are medication and therapy.
- Medication: Stimulant medications are the most common type of medication used to treat ADHD. Stimulant medications work by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, which can help to improve focus and concentration. Common ADHD medications include Adderall, Concerta, Ritalin, and Vyvanse.
- Therapy: Therapy can help people with ADHD learn coping skills to manage their symptoms. Common types of therapy used to treat ADHD include cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducation.
These treatments may be used individually or in concert with one another, depending on the patient’s needs.
